While Fes is often called Morocco’s artisanal capital, Sefrou’s artisan traditions actually predate its larger neighbor, going back to when the town was a major trading post between the Mediterranean and the Sahara.
This tour takes you straight to Hudaddine Square — a ten-minute walk from Bab El Maqam, inside Sefrou’s old medina. The square is home to weavers, blacksmiths, button-makers, ironers, and tinsmiths, many of whom work using techniques passed down through generations.
Sefrou is particularly well-known for producing djellaba buttons — the intricate handwoven silk fasteners used on traditional Moroccan robes. You’ll see craftsmen producing them on the spot, and have a chance to buy directly from the artisans.
Hudaddine Square is also one of the best places in northern Morocco to find traditional Berber rugs, pottery, and clothing — often at significantly lower prices than the equivalent Fes souks. The area also hosts a range of tailors and cobblers who can make on-the-spot adjustments to anything you buy.
The biggest selling point of this tour is the atmosphere: Hudaddine Square is calm, intimate, and relaxed — a deliberate alternative to the overwhelming intensity of the Fes Medina, where it’s hard to shop without feeling rushed or pressured.
