Caves of Sefrou — Jebel Binna & the Twin Sacred Sites

3 Hours

The caves of Sefrou are where culture, history, and nature meet — arguably the most fascinating site in the city. They sit on Jebel Binna, locally translated as “The Mountain Between Us,” a name said to represent the historic bond between Sefrou’s Jewish and Muslim communities. The mountain stands between the two faiths “hand in hand, side by side.”

The walk to the caves passes the adjacent Jewish and Muslim cemeteries, both still preserved. The Muslim cemetery may be entered, and visitors are welcome to photograph the old headstones. The Jewish cemetery is generally restricted to Jewish visitors, but much of it can be seen from the perimeter — its low walls reveal a well-tended ground that hosts several rabbis revered in the region.

At the destination, two cave openings sit side by side:

Kaf Al Yahud — the Jewish cave on the left. Some traditions hold that this is the burial site of the prophet Daniel, who many believe to have been of North African — possibly Berber — origin. The cave has become a small pilgrimage site for Jews, with visitors from Israel and the wider diaspora coming to leave offerings in search of healing. It’s not unusual to find candles, scripture, or even the remains of small ritual sacrifices upon entering.

Kaf Al Mou’men — the Muslim cave on the right, traditionally believed to hold spiritual healing powers. Women seeking marriage are sent here for blessings, often accompanied by traditional Moroccan musicians. The rituals here have continued for generations.

The presence of many cats adds to the caves’ mystical atmosphere — particularly at night. For most visitors we recommend daylight, when the inside is more accessible. For more adventurous travelers, evening visits can also be arranged.
