Sefrou & Bhalil Village — Half-Day Cultural Tour

This is the tour that gives travelers what most Morocco itineraries miss: a real encounter with the rural Middle Atlas. The first half is dedicated to Sefrou — the 1,000-year-old multicultural town once known for one of the largest Jewish communities in Morocco. You’ll walk through the medina, cross the Oued Aggai into the mellah, and visit the last remaining synagogue with its preserved woodwork and Hebrew library.

From there, we drive a short distance through olive groves to Bhalil — a Berber village unlike anywhere else in Morocco. Built directly into the soft limestone of the mountainside, Bhalil is one of the country’s last living troglodyte settlements: a vertical labyrinth of pastel homes and cave dwellings.

The cave houses of Bhalil are not ruins. They are working homes — large single living spaces used for cooking, sleeping, and daily life. As part of the tour, your guide will arrange a visit with Um Aicha, one of Bhalil’s last remaining cave dwellers, who has lived in her cave home for nearly 90 years.

While in the village, you’ll also see groups of women hand-weaving the silk djellaba buttons (Aakad) that Bhalil supplies to clothing makers across Morocco — a craft that doubles as a daily social ritual. Bhalil also offers a unique view of Sefrou from the opposite side of the cascades, surrounded by olive groves and limestone cliffs.

This is a part of Morocco that locals themselves feel is slowly vanishing. Visiting Bhalil now means seeing it while it’s still alive.
